Pharmacy in Iran
Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi (251–313 AH) was a Persian physician, philosopher, and chemist who authored enduring works in medicine, chemistry, and philosophy. He is renowned as the discoverer of alcohol and sulfuric acid. According to George Sarton (the father of the history of science), Razi was the greatest physician of Islam and the Middle Ages. In the West, this Persian scientist was known as the "Arabic Galen" because he wrote his books in Arabic. In honor of Razi's immense contributions to pharmacy, August 27th (the 5th of Shahrivar) is designated as Pharmacist's Day.
In 1850 (1229 SH), Dar ul-Funun was established through the efforts of Amir Kabir to advance sciences, featuring an Italian pharmacy teacher in the medical department. In 1918 (1297 SH), medical classes were separated into the Superior School of Medicine, and in 1922 (1301 SH), the School of Pharmacy was formally founded.
